Eclectic Backyard Water Feature on Tradd Street, Charleston
At Cardinal Pond Design & Landscapes, we design and build custom water features across the Lowcountry. From downtown Charleston to James Island, Johns Island, Kiawah Island, Isle of Palms, Sullivan’s Island, and Seabrook. Each project reflects the character of the home and the vision of the client, and this Tradd Street backyard may be one of our most unique designs yet.
What started as a request for a simple fountain turned into a full backyard transformation: one of the most eclectic, creative water features we’ve ever built.
Project Highlights
Complete backyard transformation – gutted and redesigned from the ground up.
Custom, one-of-a-kind elements – cast spillways, imported steelwork from Ukraine, and copper scuppers hand-crafted in Arizona!
Multi-sensory design – waterfalls you can hear from the street, dramatic lighting at night, and a basin large enough for a summer dip.
Creative reuse of materials – old fountains, sculptures, and repurposed masonry woven into the design.
Historic Charleston feel – pocket walls and aged brickwork styled to look like they’ve been part of the property for generations.
Surprise details throughout – hidden statues, fire bowls, lush plantings, and koi touches add intrigue at every corner.
True collaboration – months of planning, creative freedom from the homeowner, and teamwork with master builders brought it all together.
This Tradd Street backyard is proof that water features can be both art and sanctuary—especially when designed to harmonize with Charleston’s timeless charm.
